Guidance

This programme does not cover the conflicts of this period in depth, but rather uses selected events and evidence to stress its main themes of race and empire. Therefore, before viewing this programme it is suggested that students already have a reasonable knowledge of the events of this period (1900 to 1922), in particular the First World War and the Russian Revolution.

General activities

Alongside the programme students could:

• Produce a timeline of major conflicts of the twentieth century
• Plot the events mentioned in this programme on a map of Europe and Asia
• Use the internet to research the relationships between German and British soldiers on the Western Front
• Research another example of ethnic conflict that occurred within Europe in this period.

Programme-related activities

• This material can be adapted to suit the particular age and ability of the students
• The following tasks can be undertaken individually or in pairs
• Usually one copy of each worksheet is needed per student
• Encourage whole-class discussion and feedback after each activity.
