PROGRAMME 10: KATHRYN

Kathryn is 16 years old and still at school in Aberdeen. She is a strong character who knows her own mind, and she is enthusiastic and bubbly. Her real passion is for language and literature, and she spends a lot of time reading. She really wants to get away from her home town after finishing school, and her two career ideas so far are journalism and teaching, both of which she feels would involve using language.

Soon she will need to put in her application for university if that's what she decides to do, but she is uncertain of the best route for her to take. She wants to influence other people and inspire them, and both her ideas would give her this opportunity.

Kathryn talks to a life coach and a careers specialist, who arrange a series of challenges designed to help her explore these options in depth.

PROGRAMME AIMS

• To illustrate how to make a decision between two options
• To highlight the importance of talking to people who are actually working in the job or on the course that a student is interested in
• To help students understand the difference between getting a job and having a real vocation they feel passionate about
• To show the importance of hands-on experience in career planning
• To stress the role of individual careers guidance.
