TEEN TYCOONS

PROGRAMME 3: YAKI BOX

ACTIVITIES

Guidance

The programme can be used as the focus of a stand-alone lesson, or as a starter for learning about aspects of the business and working world, whether through direct or indirect experience.

These activities support a variety of individual, paired and group work and can be chosen and adapted to suit the needs of the students involved.

This programme explores the difference between marketing and selling in some practical detail.

The questions and discussion points in 'Before viewing' might better come after viewing if the group is very new to business and enterprise concepts.

Before viewing

Points for discussion and research:

What do these business terms mean?

  • Entrepreneur
  • Marketing
  • Promotion
  • Publicity
  • Target market

What is the difference between: a 'product' and a 'service' in business; 'cost' and 'price'; 'marketing' and 'selling'?

If you don't know, watch out for them while you're watching and try to define them afterwards. Look them up if you still don't know.

What do you already know about running a business? Have you ever tried? What happened? Does anyone among your family and friends run a business? What do you think are the main advantages of running your own business? What are some of the disadvantages?

After viewing

To view 4Learning video clips you will need Windows XP/2000 and Windows Media Player 9, 10 or 11. Unfortunately, the clips are not supported on Macintosh computers.

The video clips may contain a few seconds of extra material at the beginning and end. We have therefore included opening and closing descriptions to help identify the intended scene.

What makes an entrepreneur?
Clip one: 03.18 – 04.56

  • Opens with the narrator saying, 'Sarah and Adam waste no time, with no budget but brimming with ideas and experience, they head to Cheltenham.'
  • Closes with Sarah saying, '…write it down and form a strategy before I start doing something.'

What personal qualities and skills do Sarah, Adam and Michael all possess that make them successful entrepreneurs? Think of some key words that describe an entrepreneur. Do they need any formal qualifications? Did Adam or Sarah have any? How might qualifications help someone run a successful business?

[If students have watched other programmes in the Teen Tycoons series, as well as revisiting some of these questions, they could consider whether additional qualities and skills are revealed in this programme.]

Direct selling
Clip two: 11.30 – 13.42

  • Opens with Sarah saying, 'Well, normally you're not actually cooking on the Yaki Box, are you?
  • Closes with Sarah saying, 'My Mum will be well impressed that I've had my vegetables for the day.'

How is direct selling different from selling products in stores? What doesn't Sarah like about the way David has been selling the Yaki Boxes? What does she suggest he does to improve his technique? What was the key to pulling in more customers to his stand?

Make two lists: one of products that would sell well by direct methods and the other of some that would not. Take one of the products on the first list and plan your direct selling strategy. What regulations and permissions might you have to consider before you could start to sell?

From what you observed during the programme, draw a flow diagram or make a list of all the stages involved in designing and making the Yaki Box. What other business skills did David need to bring the Yaki Box to a saleable state?

Publicity
Clip three: 17.39 – 18.50

  • Opens with the narrator saying, 'Metro is read by nearly 2 million commuters every morning.'
  • Closes with David saying, 'The pressure's on.'

Why was the publicity in the Metro newspaper so useful for both the types of selling that David used? The journalist worked from home. What two pieces of equipment now make home-working common? What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of working from home? David probably worked from his home too, but what facilities did he need in addition to those that Chloe used?

The tycoons could have arranged for other types of publicity to promote the Yaki Box. What alternatives could have been used?

Design a storyboard for a TV advert for the cooking set. Cast it with actors you think would portray the target market well.

What did David learn?
Clip four: 22.18 – 23.43

  • Opens with the narrator saying, 'At the end of the two weeks the final task is complete.'
  • Closes with David saying, 'it got me a bit more organised at actually doing stuff. So, great!' [end of programme]

When David met the buyer from Selfridges in an earlier scene, did you think he had the makings of an entrepreneur? What had he learned by the time he met the buyer from House of Fraser? How did he resolve the big issues of price and safety? Decide on the two most important reasons why David now has a chance of making some serious money from his Yaki Box.
