Teen Tycoons

TEEN TYCOONS

OMNIBUS 1

ACTIVITIES

Guidance

The excerpts in this omnibus focus on the main theme covered in the full programmes.  They could be used in a stand-alone activity, or as a follow-up to activities based on one or more of the full programmes. They could help students to revise some of their previous learning, to extend it, or to go into more depth about a particular aspect of business enterprise.

Before using them it would be helpful to look at the programme notes for the programmes covered in this omnibus:

  • Yaki Box – a product designer who needs help with marketing
  • Pendragon – a rock band that is losing money
  • Kentchurch Court – a stately home that can't pay the bills.

After viewing

To view 4Learning video clips you will need Windows XP/2000 and Windows Media Player 9, 10 or 11. Unfortunately, the clips are not supported on Macintosh computers.

The video clips may contain a few seconds of extra material at the beginning and end. We have therefore included opening and closing descriptions to help identify the intended scene.

Yaki Box

The guidance and complete set of activities for the full programme can be found at Programme 3: Activities.

The following activity (repeated from Programme 3) fits well with the excerpt in this omnibus programme:

Direct selling
Clip two: 11.30 – 13.42

  • Opens with Sarah saying, 'Well, normally you're not actually cooking on the Yaki Box, are you?
  • Closes with Sarah saying, 'My Mum will be well impressed that I've had my vegetables for the day.'

How is direct selling different from selling products in stores? What doesn't Sarah like about the way David has been selling the Yaki Boxes? What does she suggest he does to improve his technique? What was the key to pulling in more customers to his stand?

Make two lists – one of products that would sell well by direct methods, and the other of some that would not. Take one of the products on the first list and plan your direct selling strategy. What regulations and permissions might you have to consider before you could start to sell?

From what you observed during the programme, draw a flow diagram or make a list of all the stages involved in designing and making the Yaki Box. What other business skills did David need to bring the Yaki Box to a saleable state?

Pendragon

The guidance and complete set of activities for the full programme can be found at Programme 2: Activities.

The following activity (repeated from Programme 2) fits well with the excerpt in this Omnibus programme:

Ethical business practice
Clip four: 19.50 – 22.39

  • Opens with the narrator saying, 'It's the final day and Pendragon's rock school band is tuning up for the gig.'
  • Closes with Michael saying, 'Just display it, just so people can have a look at it.'

Was Michael wasting his time with Nick? List some indicators that show that he was and some that show that he may not have been. Do you think that Nick would ever make an entrepreneur? Are there any other ways that Pendragon could increase its income without compromising Nick's principles? What kinds of legal activity do you consider should not be engaged in for the purpose of making money?

Kentchurch Court

The guidance and complete set of activities for the full programme can be found at Programme 5: Activities.

The following activity (repeated from Programme 5) fits well with the excerpt in this Omnibus programme:

Attitudes to business activity
Clip two: 06.57 – 08.14

  • Opens with the narrator saying, 'Finally, Michael's doing a quick recce for the photo shoot.'
  • Closes with Michael saying, 'It's quite a bit of a switch, a life swap.'

Were the tycoons wasting their time with Jan? List some indicators that show that they were and some that show they weren't. Do you think Jan has the makings of an entrepreneur? What could Michael have done before he proposed his ideas to Jan to make her more amenable to them? Why was Jan happier about doing the tours than she was about advertising the B&B?

If you owned Kentchurch, what other ways could you use to increase your income? What kinds of legal activity do you consider should not be engaged in for the purpose of making money?
