TAKE AWAY MY TAKEAWAY
OMNIBUS
OUTLINE
00:00 – 03:37
Unsuspecting takeaway addicts were sent all over the globe, to be shocked, scared and most of all enlightened, about the origins of their favourite food. Before leaving, they took the Takeaway Test, which revealed the depths of their knowledge – or ignorance – about their best-loved takeaway meal.
03:38 – 06:43
The mentors were all-important to the success of each mission, and were chosen for their knowledge, skill and enthusiasm. Some of them took a distinctly hands-on approach, and thought nothing of sprinting after a lamb or grappling a calf to the ground.
06:44 – 10:53
The pupils faced some tough challenges, including ice-fishing, buffalo-milking, snake-handling and - the one that left Lauren aghast - cow-examining…
10:54 – 14:07
Some of the students had the gruelling task of putting their dinner to death before they could start cooking. Jodie balked at slitting a chicken's throat, but Anna and Amy soon got the hang of whacking their fish over the head. Poor Jamie had the worst time of it, and almost passed out when the sheep he'd been patting not five minutes before got the chop.
14:08 – 17:12
When it came to respecting the local culture, and making efforts to bond with the people, some participants, like Jack in Kerala, shone. Others, like Rouni in Delhi, didn't.
17:13 – 20:50
And then for the final test, in front of some stern judges. Jodie forgot to add water to her batter, but still produced a passable dish. Adam and Danny had a stand-up row about cooking their veg, while Rouni's attempt at making samosas was, to use her own words, 'a disaster'.
20:51 – 24:00
Some scored top marks, while others dropped off the bottom of the scale, but overall most participants made excellent chefs. They'd learned a lot, not just about the fascinating stories behind their favourite food, but also about themselves. And that was what Take Away my Takeaway was all about.
