PROGRAMME 1: DELHI
PROGRAMME OUTLINE
00:00 – 03:31
Dave Berry drops in on 17-year-old Rouni from Milton Keynes. Rouni really loves her curries, but she's terrified when Dave hands over a ticket to Delhi and tells her she'll learn how to make them in proper Indian style.
03:32 – 04:55
Rouni's reeling with culture shock from the minute she lands in Delhi. How will she cope in a culture that's so totally different from everything she's used to?
04:55 – 05:57
At Mohan Singh Market, Rouni meets Lubna, who's been teaching Indian cookery for 15 years. They set off in search of ingredients.
05:58 – 08:27
Rouni's overwhelmed by the mass of spices and all the fruit and veg on the stalls. She's disgusted by the sight of chickens being killed and prepared, and she wants to leave.
08:28 – 09:48
Lubna and Rouni go to an Indian fast-food outlet. Rouni's a fussy eater, and if she doesn't like something she kicks up a fuss and spits it out. Lubna isn't impressed by her behaviour.
09:49 – 11:03
At Lubna's home, Rouni reflects on the way she's been acting.
11:04 – 12:51
It's day two, and Lubna's upset Rouni by asking her to change into more suitable, Indian clothes. Rouni isn't happy.
12:51 – 15:05
The world's biggest spice market is a male-dominated environment, and Rouni's drawing attention to herself. Suni, a spice market trader, shows her how to grind chillis to powder, but with her heavy-handed approach she manages to smash the mortar.
15:06 – 17:35
The next job for Rouni is to carry a 20lb sack of chillis on her back. Her shrieks and yells bring the whole market to a standstill.
17:36 – 18:45
Lubna patiently shows Rouni how to make a samosa, but is she listening? No, she's fiddling with her make-up.
18:46 – 21:30
Rouni's learned next to nothing, and it takes her two hours to produce a plate of samosas.
21:31 – 22:27
At long last, Rouni serves her samosas, but she's overdone the chilli, and they don't taste good. Rouni knows that she didn't pay attention, but already it's time to say goodbye to Lubna.
22:28 – 23:27
On her last day, Rouni visits a Hindu temple. She thinks about the experiences she's had and how they'll change her.
23:28 – 24:20
Rouni cooks a samosa for Dave, but he ends up depositing it in the bin. Has she really learned anything?
