School of Hard Knocks

Kamal Abdul

Kamal is 19 years old and lives in East London. He has three sisters and three brothers. Kamal's parents are Bangladeshi Muslims and the children speak Bengali at home and are encouraged to go to the Mosque.

Kamal works three jobs: as a personal instructor at a fitness centre, teaching young kids to box through an organization called Kid Gloves, and works one day a week at Iceland (the night shift). Kamal gives his mum money once a month to help towards supporting the family.

Kamal suffers from dyslexia, which has served to hamper his learning and as a result he left school at 16 with no GCSEs. But with a talent for physical fitness Kamal turned to physical education and is now a successful licensed fitness instructor.
