Programme 1 - Key Issues
Clothes are a big issue in this programme. Members of the public are asked why some young people look threatening, and the way they dress comes up quite a lot, especially the issue of hooded tops over the heads. Some clubs won't allow clubbers to wear tracksuits. Benji points out that there are lots of compartments in a tracksuit where you could hide weapons and drugs.
Benji mainly wears Nike and Adidas labels. At night he wears all black although he's likely to be searched as a result. He's persuaded to try some different types of clothes but he doesn't feel comfortable. He's asked why he chooses to wear clothes that label him as antisocial. He says that the only reason he should be approached by the police is because he is committing a crime. He refuses to change his clothes to prevent people thinking that he is a criminal.
Garage
Described in the programme as 'black youth music'. Because of the trouble on the streets, this is carried over into the clubs. There are a lot of different communities and cultures in the clubs who are very defensive. The territorial aspect makes it difficult for the crew to perform their music. However young kids, some as young as 12 are performing garage in all parts of the UK. Lyrics are often violent and angry, reflecting the reality of everyday life.
