Make Me A Grown Up

MAKE ME A GROWN UP

PROGRAMME 5: CAMERON

ACTIVITIES

Young people are often sensitive about personal development issues. These activities support a mix of individual, paired and group work, depending on the context and the composition of the groups involved.

Before viewing

List the characteristics of shy people and those of extroverts. Which characteristics do you possess? Share and discuss your ideas with someone you trust.

Discuss the following statement. 'Men should never wear pink because it is a female colour and gives out the wrong signals.'

Define the word 'fashionista' and explain how being a fashionista is different from being a fashion victim.

A good handshake is an essential part of any interview. Shake hands with everyone in the room. Review the activity and describe the characteristics of a good handshake.

After viewing

To view 4Learning video clips you will need Windows XP/2000 and Windows Media Player 9, 10 or 11. Unfortunately, the clips are not supported on Macintosh computers.

The video clips may contain a few seconds of extra material at the beginning and end. We have therefore included opening and closing descriptions to help identify the intended scene.

Job opportunities
Clip one: 01:12 – 01:34
Explain why Cameron looks for jobs where he will not have to talk to anyone. Give examples of the kinds of job that Cameron might be willing to do. What kind of career opportunities do these jobs give people? Do people have a chance to shine and achieve their potential in these jobs? Is this the kind of job that you would like? If not, what can you do to avoid it? Share and discuss your ideas.

Misunderstood
Clip two: 01:36 – 01:58
Discuss the reasons why most strangers think that Cameron is scary rather than shy. Working with people you trust, share examples of times in your life when you have been misunderstood. Say what caused the misunderstanding – for example, what you were wearing, how you were standing, the language you used, what you did or did not say or do. How did you try to correct the misunderstanding and what was the outcome? How could you have avoided the misunderstanding happening in the first place? What could you do in the future to stop such misunderstandings happening again?

Action plan
Clip three: 02:04 – 02:20
Give Cameron a score of out of ten for the action that he plans to take to sort out his problems and be who he wants to be – one is poor, ten is brilliant. Discuss and justify your score, suggesting how Cameron could improve his action plan. Describe what a good action plan looks like and the type of information that it contains. Make a personal action plan for something that you plan to do in the next couple of weeks and for something that you plan to do in the next couple of years. Share and discuss the results, explaining how the different time limits have influenced the content of your plans. Who could help you to work on your action plans?

Expressing personality
Clip four: 14:44 – 15:03
Take a vote on whether Gok is right to encourage Cameron to dress in a way that expresses his personality. Explore any major differences of opinion and the reasons for them. Think about the clothes that you wear and the accessories that you use. What do you think that they tell other people about you as a person? Do you come across as a different type of person in different situations? Share and discuss your ideas with people who know you. Are your clothes giving the impression that you want to give? If not, how can you change and who can help?

Interviews
Clip five: 20:42 – 21:34
List the good points about Cameron's interview performance with the photographer. Decide whether these would be good points in all job interviews or whether they apply only to interviews for creative jobs.

List the questions that the photographer asks Cameron. Identify which could be asked in any job interviews. Choose one and prepare an answer. Share your ideas and ask for constructive feedback.
