Guidance

It is highly recommended that teachers watch a programme before deciding to show it to a group.

Some programmes are not suitable for KS3 due to their content rather than the level at which the programmes are pitched. The series tackles some sensitive issues (see Series outline) and makes some sexual references, and it is therefore intended mainly for 14-year-olds and older.

Two lesson resources have been provided for each programme (see the individual Activities pages) but there is a lot more potential for discussion in each one. Materials can be adapted to suit your needs.

Group agreement

Before viewing, agree on a set of ground rules for the series – a group agreement – with contributions from the students about acceptable behaviour. This can be helpful to help set the tone for sex and relationships sessions.

A group agreement can be referred back to, or added to at any time throughout the series. Agree on appropriate language and talk about the need to take responsibility for what you choose to share, or not, in discussion. Young people can participate just by listening if they wish. Discuss respect for other people's views and the issue of confidentiality.

Teachers should be aware that some young people in their class might be sexually active while others may know far less about sex. There may be a mix of positive and negative experiences around sexual activity, as well as religious and/or cultural diversity within the class that teachers will need to be sensitive to.

Teachers should allow for students to ask any questions that may remain after viewing and discussion. This could be done in an anonymous fashion, with questions being written down and placed in a container to be answered within a whole-class context.
