Discussion
- What are all the stages leading up to a pregnancy?
- What are the main options for women who become pregnant? Who can provide support and help around the options?
- What did the programme say about childbirth? Was there enough information? What else would you like to know, if anything?
- Is there an ideal time to become a parent? When might this be?
- Kierky says parenthood is much more challenging for young people. Why might this be?
Activity ideas
- Sexual activity is one way to become pregnant and have a child. What other methods might people employ to become parents? Investigate adoption, surrogacy and in-vitro fertilisation (IVF). What are some of the issues surrounding these other ways of becoming a parent? When might they be appropriate, and what might be the challenges?
- Learn about the developmental stages between conception and childbirth. Go to the following NHS Choices website to look at slides showing a baby's development from the earliest stages:
www.nhs.uk/conditions/Pregnancy/Pages/
Introduction.aspx?url=Pages/what-is-it.aspx
- Work in groups to think about all that is required to bring up a baby – emotionally and financially. You could consider all of the items required for a new baby and add up the cost. (Don't forget childcare.) Also consider changes to the parents' social lives and the pressures their relationship may face.
- Read Flour Babies by Anne Fine, a novel that tells the story of Class 4C, charged with looking after flour babies as part of the annual school science fair. (See Find out more for ordering details.)
Straight talking advice and real life stories on the subjects that matter to teenagers, including sex and relationships.
