GAY TO Z
PROGRAMME 5
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
In Programme 5 we meet up with Lewis and Holly at Gay Pride in Brighton and Stephen surprises Kevin with a proposal.
- Lewis is 18 and lives with his dad and sister in Leicester. He has been looking for love throughout the series and this time we see him out on the pull with one of his friends
- Holly is 21 and a student. She loves living in Brighton and in this programme she is our guide at Pride
- Stephen and Kevin have just moved into their own flat and love it. Stephen takes Kevin on a limo trip around London and has a very special question to ask.
This programme carries on the theme of LGB young people negotiating sex and relationships.
Lewis is looking for love and getting nowhere fast. We see him out in his hometown and ending the night in tears. It seems that sex is easy to find but love is much more difficult to come across. On the other hand, Stephen and Kevin have found love with each other and are planning to spend the rest of their lives together. We see Stephen proposing and Kevin tearfully accepting.
There is also information on the 'scene', the name used to describe gay bars and clubs. We see Lewis and Holly out with friends and hear how exciting it can be to go out for the first time and see so many other LGB people in the same place. However, it can also be intimidating and there is a strong message conveyed about being yourself and not being pressurised into doing anything you do not want to. The programme also provides information on keeping yourself safe.
Holly guides us around Gay Pride in Brighton, a celebration of all things LGB that looks like a lot of fun. Lewis and his friend Neisha have come from Leicester for the day and are having a ball. We find out a bit more about sex when you are LGB and get some information on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. Holly and Lewis talk frankly about sex and the best sex they've ever had, both concluding that it was with longer-term partners rather than on one-night stands.
