RUBY HAMMMER
Ruby was born in Nigeria in West Africa. Highly influenced by Bollywood films and the stories told to her by the nomadic peoples from the Sahara, Ruby developed a sense of fantasy. She would later use these influences in her work as a make up artist. Ruby and her family moved to the UK when she was 12. She studied economics at City University of London.
First career decision
After receiving her economics degree, Ruby met a famous make-up artist by chance. She decided to try her hand in the fashion world. After apprenticing for a year she gained a reputation as well- organised and hard-working.
The turning point
As a jobbing make-up artist, Ruby spent 10 years working on models such as Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington. She was in constant demand, but another chance meeting at Harvey Nichols with a woman named Millie Kendall changed her life. With a shared passion for cosmetics, Ruby and Millie decided to launch their own cosmetics line based on their collective knowledge and experience in the industry.
Conflict: The major and the minor
Though Ruby was always fascinated by make-up and experimented constantly as a young girl, she was expected to follow her father into medicine and become a doctor. After following her own career-path, Ruby soon found that a make-up artist is never told what to do. She also learned to use both her creativity and her ability to communicate to forge strong working relationships and overcome the sometimes difficult personality types found in the industry. Keeping her cosmetics line current and bringing new product to the market is also constant challenge.
Resolution
After launching Ruby & Millie cosmetics 6 years ago, Ruby continues to work as a jobbing make-up artist. Keeping a constant high profile helps build their brand name, and both Ruby and Millie have aspirations to take their cosmetics to the USA. To this day, Ruby is still grateful that what was once a hobby has enabled her to live a very comfortable life.
