Before viewing

In a group or class, brainstorm the following and record responses on a board or paper. Ask students what they associate with:

1. make-up
2. a person's image

Briefly discuss what students personally think it would be like. Record their responses.

The film follows Ruby from her experiences as a young girl with an interest in make up and Bollywood movies, to her degree in economics, apprenticeship and subsequent success in the fashion industry. Ruby eventually develops a popular cosmetics line with her friend Millie. You may wish to have groups of students focus on the following:

• the relationship between personality and make-up
• all the elements which affect doing good make-up
• the many creative influences/references

After Viewing

Key Questions:

has the film made students:

• more aware of something?
• think more deeply about some issue/what they want or don't want to do?
• changed their opinion about the profession in any way?

Discuss and compare with their original brainstorm.

Activity (Class or group)

• Make lists on how a person's looks affect your perception of them. Tear sheets from magazines to represent these different perceptions, matching the look to the response or reaction it elicits. Discuss how people respond to colour, to light, to texture. Use examples again found in magazines.
