NICKY CLARKE

Activities

Before viewing

In a group or class, brainstorm the following and record responses on a board or paper. Ask students what they associate with:

  1. male hairdressers
  2. working in a salon or the fashion world.
Briefly discuss what students personally think it would be like. Record their responses.

The film follows Nicky growing up in South London. Disinterested in school, he chose to pursue his hobby as a profession. At 15 he encountered a camp world, having to reconcile his lack of social skills in a very wealthy environment with very famous people. He went on to make a name for himself and eventually opened his own salon, and now charges £500 a haircut. You may wish to have groups of students focus on the following:

  • Nicky failing his exams
  • his relationship with his father
  • his lack of social skills and shyness
