DON'T MAKE ME ANGRY 1
PROGRAMME 3: BARNEY
ACTIVITIES
To view 4Learning video clips you will need Windows XP/2000 and Windows Media Player 9, 10 or 11. Unfortunately, the clips are not supported on Macintosh computers.
The video clips may contain a few seconds of extra material at the beginning and end. We have therefore included opening and closing descriptions to help identify the intended scene.
Rachel interviews Barney
Clip 1: 04:24
– 06:08
- In: (Rachel) 'I think that's why I was thinking…'
- Out: (Barney) 'Because as soon as I lose it, I lose it.'
What things would you change about members of your family? How do you think they might like you to change?
What does Rachel do and say to encourage Barney in this clip?
Listen to the advice that she gives for controlling angry outbursts (counting to 10, holding your breath, walking away). Have you ever used any of these techniques? What advice could you give for avoiding angry confrontations with people?
Rachel interviews Barney's dad
Clip 2: 11:23 –
12:29
- In: (Rachel) 'But I wonder if you notice sometimes how negative you are.'
- Out: (Father) '…so better to ignore it.'
In this clip, Barney's father is reading extracts from a recent report. He only focuses on the negative aspects (in the next scene, Rachel only focuses on the positive). What effect could negativity have on another person? How did you feel when someone (maybe a teacher) said something negative about you? His father says that when he used to praise him, Barney's behaviour became worse. Why do you think this was?
Rachel and the family talk about Barney's
progress
Clip 3: 20:40
– 21:43
- In: (Father) 'On the whole, Barney's worked really well with you guys.'
- Out: (Rachel) 'You're never gonna know actually what that person's actually gonna be like.'
Compare the difference between Barney's dad in clips 2 and 3. What effect might this discussion have on Barney?
