PROGRAMME 6: CASTLES AND THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR

ACTIVITIES

Guidance

In addition to its emphasis on castles, this programme would be suitable for any students in secondary school and beyond who are studying the English Civil War. It needs to be shown in its entirety since it tells a continuous story.

Alongside the programme students could:

• Use the internet to produce a timeline of the English Civil War
• Write and act out a role play of what would have been happening inside Raglan Castle during the 1646 siege
• Look at images of Raglan Castle using the virtual tour on the Channel 4 website that accompanies this series and choose one to sketch
• Find out what happened at the Battle of Naseby and find it on a map
• Find out what happened to the royal family after the English Civil War.

Programme-related activities

• The following tasks can be undertaken individually or in pairs
• Usually one copy of each worksheet is needed per student
• Encourage whole-class discussion and feedback after each activity.
