PROGRAMME 4: THE AGE OF THE CASTLE AS A HOME

ACTIVITIES

Guidance

This programme not only teaches students about a particular era in castle building but also illustrates the domestic arrangements of the nobility. Students can either watch the whole programme or be shown selected sections. As well as its obvious connection to the history curriculum, this programme could be used as stimulus material within English and/or drama lessons to encourage creative writing and role play.

Alongside the programme students could:

• Draw a rough plan, diagram or picture to show Bodiam Castle
• Write and act out a fictitious scene from the lives of Edward and Elizabeth Dallingridge
• Use the internet to investigate the period further
• Take the virtual tours on the 'Castle' website.

Programme-related activities

• The following tasks can be undertaken individually or in pairs
• Usually one copy of each worksheet is needed per student
• Encourage whole-class discussion and feedback after each activity.

Task 1: Real defences or just showing off?
Students need to focus on section 03.01 – 07.55 and 17.54 – 20.05.
