Adopt Me - I'm a Teenager

Lakeisha

Lakeisha (African American) was placed in foster care while still a baby after suffering neglect and physical abuse. Since then she has moved from one foster home to another in and around Boston. A stable family life is something she has no experience of.

Now she has rowed with her foster mother and as a result her social worker has put her into another home.

Pam and Willie Jones, a middle class, African-American couple with two grown-up biological children and one adopted son, had seen Lakeisha in the MARE photo listings. Now they are ready to meet her and make her part of their family.

Lakeisha's social worker shows her the 'welcome book' that the Jones's have prepared for her. It shows pictures of their family and their home. Lakeisha is excited – her eyes light up. Could this finally be the family for her?

Lakeisha soon seems settled at the Jones's. But trouble is just round the corner. Although Lakeisha is 14, she behaves like a 5 year old. She throws tantrums and is very demanding. She is lazy, cannot get up in the morning and is always late for church. The Jones's are a very active, busy, and strict family.

They soon begin to complain about her antics. They feel she is bratty, lazy, inconsiderate, and selfish - and they are not going to put up with it! Lakeisha, on the other hand, doesn't seem to be aware of the problems.

The day comes when the Jones's have to sign guardianship of Lakeisha so that she can move in and live with them as part of the family...
