Answers to viewing questions

  1. Ali spends a lot of time outdoors fishing and, in particular, looking after his pigeons.

  2. Ali is late for school because he stopped to talk to so many people. The people in Turkey are very friendly, and in his village they always stop to speak to him and give him gifts.

  3. The dinner is special because Ali and his father caught the fish themselves.

Answers to optional assignments

  1. No, the Turks and the Greeks haven’t always got on very well. They have disagreed and fought with each other for thousands of years. However, they get on better today than they ever have: as neighbouring countries, they have realised that it is better for them to have a good relationship with each other.

  2. The countries that surround Turkey affect it in many ways. Turkey is historically an eastern country, and still has many cultural things in common with its Asian neighbours. However, it is also part of modern western Europe, with modern European cities. The overall effect is that Turkey is a very diverse place, with many of the best features of both the European and Asian cultures that surround it.
