Turkey is located at the point where the three
continents of Asia, Africa and Europe are at their closest to each
other.
Eastern Turkey is very cold and snowy in
winter, and only warm in high summer. The south of Turkey is dry
and mild in winter and very hot in summer, with temperatures above
45°c not unusual.
The Turks have
been drinking coffee since 1555, when it was brought to Istanbul by
two Syrian traders.
The
‘Sunken Palace’ in Istanbul is actually an ancient
water tank. It was rediscovered by a Frenchman who saw locals
pulling fish through gaps in the pavement!
The highest point in
Turkey is Mount Ararat which is 5,166 metres tall.
The remains of Noah's Ark are thought to be
buried on Mount Ararat.
The Bosporus
Bridge, near Istanbul, connects Asia with Europe. It is the world's
fourth longest suspension bridge.
The Keban Dam on the River Euphrates generates
power for much of eastern and central Turkey.
Tea is the
national drink of Turkey.
Camel
wrestling is a popular sport in Turkey! Two camels push against
each other until one is knocked over or runs away.
Turkey produces 65% of the world's
hazelnuts.
