| MAGGIE: I spent the day trudging round shops looking for work, and nothing came my way. But God works in mysterious ways. I was in despair until I met a nice woman called Bessie. She said I could find work in the Bryant and May factory making matches. It's not paradise she says, but then I don't want paradise - I want a job! |

| BESSIE:
I was sitting on the park bench when this girl comes and joins me.
Crying her eyes out, she was, and it turns out she can't get a job.
I took a liking to her straight off, and offered to get her in to
Bryant and May. She jumped at it, poor thing, though maybe she
won't be thanking me so such when she finds out what Foreman
Watkins is like. I think we're going to be good
friends.
F0REMAN WATKINS: Bessie Miller brought in a new girl today. She claims this Maggie girl will be a good worker. And pigs will fly, say I! That Miller don't know the meaning of work. Spends all her time talking if I'm not watching her. It gives me great pleasure to catch those girls out. I love to fine 'em. Makes my job worth doing! |
