MAGGIE: Worst
day of my life. I was summoned to see Mrs Willoughby. When I got
there, Mrs Higgins was with her. So was Susan. As soon as I saw
her, I feared the worst... |

MRS HIGGINS: A very distressing day. I have always prided myself that I am a good judge of character but now it seems that Maggie Johnson is a thief. There is something not quite right about the story, and I am not sure that Susan is entirely to be trusted, but Mrs Willoughby was very firm. Maggie has to leave, and without a reference. Poor girl. I fear she will find it very hard to find work now. MRS WILLOUGHBY: So the mystery is solved. It was Maggie Johnson all along who had been stealing things. Naturally, I have dismissed her without a reference. It was a disagreeable task, but it is one's duty to safeguard property first and foremost. It just shows the working classes are not to be relied on. I am grateful to Susan Bailey for revealing the truth. I am fortunate indeed to have such a trustworthy servant. SUSAN: Everything's worked out perfect! I told Mrs Willoughby that Maggie had found the coin and had said she'd hand it in herself. They beleeved me! So now Maggie's bin sacked without a reference, -and they think she not only kept the coin but stole the broach and the ring. How very convenyent! See, Maggie? I don't forget!! |
