pl@net.com was a Channel 4 Schools series for the new millennium. The video is available to purchase from the online Learning shop. Plus the accompanying teacher's guide. You can buy both these products over the phone by calling the Channel 4 sales team on 08701 246 444.

A global rise in sea level of one metre will mean 13 million people in Bangladesh will lose their land and homes.

Not your problem?

This human tragedy - and subsequent deaths - will be a direct result of our wasteful use of fossil fuels adding to global warming. This is just one of the many stories that unfold in a new series of programmes developed by Channel 4 Schools. The programmes and a range of support materials help teachers and pupils examine this and some of the other key issues facing the world in the twenty-first century.

The series addresses the question: How can we make the world a more sustainable and fairer place for all its people? It presents case studies from the UK and the wider world, which highlight the scale and impact of the problems. Some of the stories will alarm and appal, engaging children in the question of what is happening all around them. There is a strong emphasis on action, and the programmes convey the positive message that there are ways for individuals to make a difference.

Throughout the series, there will be a widening of the political debate into developmental concerns. We hope children will arrive at an understanding not only of the environmental threats to their planet but also of their underlying economic and social causes.

The series follows a lively, modern approach. It is both bleak and uplifting by turns, never pulling its punches on the problems but always optimistic about the solutions. The programmes use wit and humour, accentuating the positive opportunities and empowering the individual to become an active citizen.

The series has one main presenter, Shilpa Mehta, and a number of local reporters, many of them children based in various international 'trouble spots'.

As we move into the era of digital and interactive television and online learning, Channel 4 is evolving beyond the traditional role of a television broadcaster, with integrated programmes and online support. pl@net.com is a stylish and dynamic multimedia project, which offers advice and information both on screen and on the Internet. The website is intended to become a central forum for individual children, environmental activists, and schools. It will include links to appropriate sites around the world, advice on how to campaign, information on projects to get involved in, and a news area. The site will encourage people to become active citizens both locally and globally.

Planned, primarily, to help teachers introduce aspects of sustainable education, encourage pupils to think globally but act locally and become global citizens, it is hoped that all those involved in sustainable and development education will enjoy the programmes and website, and will be inspired to take up some of the ideas and issues raised, and start to campaign locally, nationally and internationally for a better, fairer and more sustainable world.
