Here are some
things to remember when starting out:
- Issues and ideas must be the genuine
concerns of the kids rather than your own
- Listen to them and take their views
seriously
- Tell them when there is genuine
choice
- Make it clear it is to be an individual
or group choice
- Don't consult, then ignore
them
- Make sure participation is
real
Plan and structure activities which help pupils to:
- Express and challenge different points of view
- Negotiate and compromise
- Make individual and group decisions
- Understand that some actions are more appropriate and likely to
succeed
- Weigh up consequences before making a decision
- Take responsibility for their actions
Open up possibilities to them, but also help them to realise that
there are limitations to what individuals can do.
Realise that change can happen at different levels: individual,
local, national, and global.
