Most governments charge the
public between one-fifth and one-quarter of the real cost of water.
Maybe if we all paid more, we would be more careful.
Get the whole family to follow these rules:
- Use washing-up water to water the
garden.
- Use buckets of water, instead of a hose,
to wash the car.
- Save water by using rain water wherever
possible.
Leaks and drips
Any leak from pipes will waste water and money. For example, a leak
of 10 litres per minute (equivalent to one tap permanently on)
could cost more than £5,000 per year!
A tap leaking at one drip per second wastes 1,200 litres per year
– enough for a large pond. Leaks may be difficult to spot so
check by looking at the water meter at night or at weekends when
water is not normally used.
