- If the council officer can’t help,
or if you want the council to change its policy, you’ll have
to contact the councillor. Councillors are elected, and are
responsible for particular subjects, just like officers. If
you’re involved in a major campaign you’ll need to get
to know the councillors too.
- Get local people on your side. Get them
to put pressure on the council.
- Know your facts – the council will
take you more seriously.
- Be persistent and don’t expect
overnight success. Councils move slowly.
- Don’t accept ‘we can’t
afford it’ as the answer!
- Expect to win! Friends of the Earth
local groups have had great successes with their councils. Why not
you too?
This idea was taken from a Friends of the Earth
book called 'Causing A Stink - The Eco Warrior's Handbook'
by Caroline Clayton, published by Bloomsbury Publishing
