Here is a start!
BUT don't forget the simple things you can do.
- The three R’s
- Sort your waste
- Someone, somewhere in the world could
use it
The three R’s
- Re-use!
Copier paper can be backed or used in a fax machine. Milkbottles
can be washed and returned for many journeys.Carrier bags can be
used again and again - remember ittakes 50 years for a plastic
carrier bag to degrade.
- Recycle!
Aluminium cans, paper waste, plastics and glass can all berecycled
and turned into something new!
- Reduce!
Use less of everything you can - fewer carrier bags - less paper -
less wrapping. Encourage people to do the same - at home, at
school.
Sort your waste
Collect and separate your waste. Keep separate containers
for:
Bottles - clear and coloured
Aluminium cans
Paper - including newspapers
Plastic - including bags and bottles
Include a short diversion to the tip when you are going that way -
and drop off your materials for recycling into their special
bins.
Someone, somewhere in the world could use it
Someone, somewhere could use your throw aways. Many charities
collect things that can be used in other countries. Organisations
like the Association for
Science Education can put you in touch with other organisations
that collect unwanted science equipment and send it
abroad.
There are other organisations that can make use of materials you
have finished with.
Return unwanted medicines to your local chemist. Ask about sending
unused medicines abroad.
Find out about organisations that send unwanted text-books - up to
ten years old - to countries where school children have no books.
That's books you've finished with - it doesn't mean the subject you
like least!
Many organisations collect good clothes and small items either for
resale or for sending abroad. You will get a sack through your
door. There could be a good home for that cardigan you wouldn't be
seen dead in! |
