What to do?

Here are some ideas for encouraging biodiversity in your garden.

Unfortunately, short-sighted Sylvia cannot see the advantages of them.

Think of an argument to back each of your ideas!

Sylvia: That'll look really untidy!

2. I want to plant plants that attract butterflies.

Sylvia: That'll look horrible. They'll all be weeds!

3. I want to build a pond. They are called the rain forests of the countryside because of the astonishing range of species crammed into them. They can contain more wildlife than rivers.

Sylvia: Ponds are dangerous. You can drown in a garden pond.

4. I want to make a herb garden. Plants such as thyme, rosemary and marjoram are good for insects.

Sylvia: We can buy dried herbs at the supermarket.

5. I want to go organic. Chemicals used in gardens are highly unsustainable, take a lot of energy to create and upset the natural balance.

Sylvia: But chemicals work!

6. I want to make my own compost with a home built compost bin.

Sylvia: Pooh! Smelly!

7. I want to stop using peat, it is a non-renewable resource.

Sylvia: Nonsense. Ireland is full of peat!

8. I want to try and buy native source seeds, better still locally grown.

Sylvia: Seeds come in packets, don't they?

9. I want to start a community garden. Talk to owners of under-used land and get a few local people interested in making a garden.

Sylvia: Who will want to help you?

10. I want to buy plants that don't require a lot of watering throughout the year.

Sylvia: Why does that matter?
