Extra - Teacher's Notes
What is Extra? Programme Notes CD-ROMs and DVDs

What is Extra?

Extra is a Modern Languages strand, featuring programmes and interactive resources aimed primarily at 14–19 year olds, but it will also be of interest to older students who would like to improve their French, Spanish or German language skills.

The success and innovation of the Extra TV series is that it combines real learning with a genuinely entertaining, sophisticated and sometimes risqué

sitcom format that appeals to the 'Friends' generation. Two young women share a flat in the city. They have a neighbour who fancies himself, and one of the women. She doesn't return his affection, but her flatmate does. Their landlady has very strict guidelines for the tenants and she regularly checks up on them."

The series covers all the main programmes of study and grammatical areas needed for success at GCSE/SG. The scripts have been carefully written for the target audience, and for those who find language learning difficult, the American protagonist, Sam, is there to come to their rescue. His efforts to get to grips with the language provide the central dynamic for the language learning content of the series.
