Water in - Water out!

Two thirds of your body is water.

You need to take in water to live. But you are losing water all the time.

The water needs replacing. But you may not always be drinking it.

You need:
- A plastic bowl
- A wooden pastry roller
- A thick slice of cucumber
- An orange segment
- A spoonful of cottage cheese
- A thick slice of carrot

Try this
What do you think you will get when you crush and squeeze each food? Predict how much juice you think each has in it.

Now try this
Now take one food at a time and crush it in the bowl with the pastry roller. Record your results. Wash the bowl between each test.

You need about two litres of water a day to live. That's the size of a family bottle of pop. But you probably don't drink that much.

Where does the rest of your water come from?
What other foods might contain a lot of water?
In what ways do you lose water every day?

Did you know?   Cucumber is nearly all (99%) water
Oranges are nine-tenths water
Cottage cheese is three-quarters water
Carrots are nine-tenths water

(More surprisingly, bread is two-fifths water, eggs are three-quarters water, and even butter and margarine have water in them.)
