Light works

A boy put some seeds in pots. He covered them with soil. 'Don't be silly,' said his friend, 'plants won't grow in the dark.' Who was right?

Try this
Plant some seeds that grow quickly and easily - like nasturtium or quick-growing brassicae - in yoghurt pots filled with good soil.

Try four different tests:

1 On the surface of the soil and in the light.
2 On the surface of the soil and in the dark.
3 Buried in the soil and in the light.
4 Buried in the soil and in the dark.

Growing seeds in the lightGrowing seeds in the darkWater all four. Keep the soil moist, but not wet.

Keep a written record of what happens over the next few weeks.

Now try this

  • Now write up what you found out. Make sure you include any conclusions about seeds sprouting and plants growing.
