Employment Survey
Today, the coal mines that brought people
to work and live in Gelli have gone and new employment patterns
have replaced the old ones. Many of the people who live in the
former coal mining settlements in South Wales now commute to work
in shops, offices and factories further south.

Carry out an employment survey in your
area asking parents and others in the community about their work.
Draw a table like the one below:
Person
Location of place of
work
Type of work
Method of travel to work
On a map of the region surrounding your
locality, mark the places where the people in your survey
work.
| |
Group the type of work that people do
under the three headings below. You could store, sort and graph
this information on a computer.
People who make things
People who work in
offices
People who provide a
service
Method of travelling to
work:
Why do you think some people use their own private transport to
travel to work and some people use public transport?
