How does the Thames Barrier protect London?

Answer

The Thames Barrier is a major part of London's flood defence scheme. It protects the city against rising water levels and tidal surges. The structure spans 520 metres and consists of ten movable gates between concrete pillars. When raised, the gates are as high as a five-storey building.
