Interactive Activity

Hari is the new kid on the block. He's looking forward to starting college and making friends.

Life is looking pretty good... that is, until he encounters a racist gang who are terrorising the neighbourhood.

Major social issues, like racism or gender discrimination, cannot be viewed in black 'n' white. We all have the capability to be perpetrators as well as be potential targets of hurtful acts.

Many people are singled out unjustly - because of the colour of their skin, or their sex, their religion, or because of disability - and subjected to acts of discrimination or violence.

According to the British Crime Survey, in 1999 there were 280,000 racially motivated incidents.

Step into Hari's shoes and see if you can help him make some difficult, perhaps controversial, choices.

Aims:
During this activity students will consider racism and bullying. They reflect on different situations in which they might see or hear bullying and racist behaviour. After completing the activity and accompanying worksheet, students should be able to:

Citizenship, KS4
Knowledge and understanding about becoming informed citizens

Developing skills of enquiry and communication

Developing skills of participation and responsible action

Worksheet
  1. You have steered Hari through some of the trials and tribulations of the 4 Life saga. Now, take some time to reflect on the story line that you have followed. In small groups, discuss the following:

  2. Give 3 examples of incidents that could be construed as racist.

  3. Make a list of at least 12 words that you associate with bullying.

  4. Give 3 examples of discriminatory behaviour and identify any law[s] designed to protect citizens from the types of behaviour you have listed.

  5. If you were being bullied where could you seek help and advice? Name at least 6 people, places or organistions that would be able to help.

  6. The Justice system treats young people differently to adults. Can you give 3 examples of this.

  7. How do you think a bully should be dealt with? Is bullying a crime? Can bullying behaviour ever be excused?

  8. Find out if your school has an anti-bullying policy. What does it say? Do you agree with it? Would you change it?

  9. You have been appointed as the student spokesperson for your school year. Your immediate task is to develop and promote an anti-bullying policy.

How would you go about raising awareness of the issues? How would you ensure that everyone in your year is given the opportunity to contribute towards the policy?

What types of activities could students get involved in to help ensure that everyone understands the issues e.g. poster campaign?

You will need to research Acts of Parliament, and laws, that your policies will have to comply with.

Click to go to the top of the page Hari's house: Scene 1
Hari is on the street and sees racist graffiti on wall. He comes across a small gang harassing another lad, Mus.

HARIEr, hi there. I'm Hari, and this is where I live.
HARII've just moved here with my family from a nearby town. I'm about to start a course at the college here. Wonder what the locals are like? I'm gonna go check out the scene...
HARI!!# Tsss! Who writes this rubbish? If I ever caught them doing it!
MARIOHey Abdul!! You one of those Arab Muslims, huh?
WAYNEYou lot kill innocent whites cos ya crap religion says so!
MARIOWhy don't you go back to Arabia?
SCOTTYou better watch your back!
MARIOWe'll find out where you live and bomb your house!
MUSWhat have I ever done to you?
MUSYou're so clueless about what it means to be Muslim!
MARIOToo right!
MARIOI don't wanna know how your twisted minds work.
MARIOWhat d'you think you're looking at? Not from round here, are ya? You know nothin' 'bout what goes on here, see? Best keep your nose out so GET LOST OR YOU'RE NEXT!
HARIGrrrrr! It makes my blood boil! Wouldn't want to be in his shoes! But how can I leave him in this mess? I dunno what to do? If I step in maybe they'll back off - there's only three of 'em.
HARI...But if I get involved, it might make it worse. I'm a prime target for racist thugs like them. And I don't want those muppets on my back.

Hari and Mus go to college. They are in the corridor talking when they hear a disturbance. They look round and realise its directed at them, and that it's the same lads from last week.

HARISee! They're right cowards!
HARII went over and the cowards ran off. Didn't even get to pull any martial arts moves on'em! Hah! So, hopefully we won't have to deal with that kinda thing again.
HARIGood thing is, since then, Mus and I have become mates. Guess what? He is going to the same college as me on some day release course. Cool huh? Today is the first day of term...
MUSIt was dead cool of you to stick up for me. I'm glad we're mates.
HARIHey, that's ok.
HARICouldn't leave you to the mercy of those vicious monkeys, could I?
HARIWonder what that racket is all about?
HARIUh-oh! Look who it is...
MARIOOI FREAK - WHA'S THAT ON YOUR 'EAD?
WAYNEBLOWN ANYONE UP RECENTLY?
SCOTTYOU'RE GONNA GET IT!
MUSShoot! Let's get outta here!
HARIIt was a mistake to think we wouldn't see their ugly mugs again. Making a swift exit seems a good idea. Hmm. Tho' if we run away they'll think they can get away with dishing out abuse. These jokers need to be taught a lesson. I have the same rights as anyone else here! I don't want to get into a fight though...

SWIFT EXIT: GO TO SCENE 3AA
TEACH-EM-A-LESSON: GO TO SCENE 3AB

Q: Why have Mus and Hari become mates?
  1. Because Hari is the hardest guy on the block and Mus is scared of him
  2. Because Mus is too weak to fight his own battles
  3. Because Hari was prepared to stand by Mus when he really needed someone's support

Click to go to the top of the page The bus stop: Scene 2B
Hari is on the street on his way home from college. He spies the same lads that he saw the other day picking on Mus. They spy him too and start name calling and threatening him…

HARIWell, let me tell you, I got outta there, fast! I just hope none of 'em saw me. So, a week's gone by an' I've been tryin' to keep a low profile.
HARIBut hey, I started college today. I met some new people who were pretty sorted. Felt a bit bad though, cos one of the guys, Mus, was the lad I saw the other week getting hassle from that gang.
HARII left him in a bit of a fix. Still, that's history. I reckon me, Mus, Jake and Eko are gonna be good buddies. Anyhow, I'm off home for my tea now after a hard day's work!
MARIOOI! GO BACK TO YOUR OWN COUNTRY!
WAYNEGET 'IM!
SCOTTPULL HIS TURBAN OFF!
MARIOSMASH HIS GLASSES!
SUZIEOh no! I hope they don't turn on us!
SUZIEYou can try to be a good citizen, but if you 're a bit different you get harassed. Makes you think how vulnerable we all are...
SMUMaybe I should phone the Police?
SUZIEHope the bus comes soon...
HARII should get the hell outta here. They mean business... I don't wanna let them push me around! I do know martial arts, but I don't wanna get in a fight...

It's Wednesday afternoon and Hari has free study period in the library. Hari sees a girl, Mie crying quietly by herself. She confesses that some lads have harassed her at lunchtime. And it isn't the first time. She's upset and angry [crying] - they have been racist and made aggressive advances on her.

HARIIt seems all is quiet on the western front. It's a bit suspect - they are probably giving someone else grief! Anyway, it's Wednesday afternoon, 'n' I have a free study period in the library.
HARIHey? Are you alright there?
MIESniff! No! These evil boys keep harassing me! They call me filthy names and touch me up. I tell them 'leave me alone' but they don't listen! What can I do?
HARII'm sorry, That's too bad! So lame picking on girls! What are you gonna do?
MIEPicking on anyone is lame! Dunno what to do yet. I'm so mad I just want them to suffer some serious pain!
HARIHmmm! Sounds like it could be the same jokers who were hasslin' me! Look, if you feel up to it you could complain to your Head of Course. I can come with you if you like?
MIEDunno if I feel like telling that ol' man. He's practically Victorian in his attitude. I don't think he approves of me cos I'm lippy sometimes. He'll probably think I asked for it...

COMPLAIN TO THE DEAN: GO TO SCENE 4AAA
SORT IT: GO TO SCENE 4AAB

Q: Why is Mie upset?
  1. Because her Father lives far away in Hong Kong and she hasn't seen him in years
  2. Because she is being persistently sexually and racially harassed by a group of lads
  3. Because one of her so-called best mates has been spreading vicious gossip about her

Click to go to the top of the page The college library: Scene 3AB
Hari is in college. It is lunchtime and he has to visit the toilet before going for lunch. One of the gang members is there…

HARII was furious. I couldn't just walk off! Who do they think they are? I've lived in Britain all my life. My family has worked hard and paid their taxes. And my granddad fought in WWII for the Allies. He was a Ghurkha, meaning really hard-core!
HARIBet half their ancestors aren't from Britain either...
HARIBut not much has happened since. Those idiots must've have found someone else to pick on.
HARIAnyway, it's my lunch break now, so, if you don't mind, I'm goin' for a quick slash then I'm off to the cafe for some food. Mmm.
HARIUh-oh!
MARIOOh... its 'im!
HARIWhat's that you say?
HARIOn no! Looks like it's showdown at the OK Corral. Hmm. Maybe he'll be a bit cool as he's on his own? But perhaps this is my chance to tell him where he an' his chicken mates can step off. Whatever, I gotta keep my head together.

BE COOL: GO TO SCENE 4ABB

Q: Mario's paternal grandparents are...?

  2. Australian
  3. Polish
Hari's bedroom: Scene 3BA
Hari is in bed and doesn't want to get up as he is anxious about seeing the bully boys again. He is thinking about staying in bed and bunking college, but he doesn't want to tell his parents what's going on. He could lie to them or maybe his friends can help him out.

HARIUrggggh! It's Thursday morning, I don't wanna get outta bed.
HARII wanna avoid running into that stupid gang...
HARII feel pretty nervous, don't wanna go out in case they get me!
HARIBut I don't wanna worry my folks.
HARII could lie 'n' say I have flu...?
HARIThat'll keep 'em all off my back...
HARIP'rhaps those bully-boys will forget I exist?
HARII feel pretty nervous...
HARIHmm!
HARIBut if I bunk college I'll get behind in my work?
HARI...'n' it's only the first term!
HARIMaybe Mus, Jake or Eko can help me out?

KEEP LOW PROFILE: GO TO SCENE 4BAA
TELL YOUR MATES: GO TO SCENE 4BAB

Q: Hari won't get up to go to college. Why is this?
  1. Because he is lazy
  2. Because it is a religious holiday
  3. Because he is stressed - scared that he will be beaten up

Click to go to the top of the page Hari's bedroom: Scene 3BB
Monday evening - Hari is at home, after being at the hospital getting bandaged up. Facing up to those lads by himself got him into a nasty fight. The police had turned up but were not sympathetic - all they saw were a bunch of lads brawling in the street. Hari's parents try to persuade him to go to the police station to complain and report the incident properly.

HARII thought those scumbags would never leave me alone... unless I sorted it there and then. So, I got a pasting and had to take a trip to A&E! Huh - only been here five minutes and already this has happened. And the police weren't remotely sympathetic... anyway, I'm home now and I need to think about what I'm gonna do next.
HARII'm hacked off the police didn't take me more seriously. Tho, I suppose if they hadn't turned up it would've been worse for me. But it must've looked obvious what was going on.
HARIYou'd think they'd have a clue after all that stuff about Stephen Lawrence and that.
HARIMy parents tried to persuade me to go to the cop shop to report the incident 'n' stuff. They reckon someone will do something then. I am not convinced.
HARISo should I go to the police, do you think?
HARIARGGG! I WISH SOMEBODY WOULD TELL ME WHAT TO DO RIGHT NOW!!

KEEP LOW PROFILE: GO TO SCENE 4BBA
PHONE THE POLICE: GO TO SCENE 4BBB

Q: Why does Hari mention Stephen Lawrence in relation to the police not taking him seriously?
  1. Because Hari thinks it proves that everyone in the police force is racist and they won't listen to anyone from an ethnic minority
  2. Because institutional racism in the police force was deemed largely responsible for the teenager's racist killers walking free
  3. Because Hari is trying to make his situation seem worse than it actually is

The dean's office: Scene 4AAA
Hari and Mie have gone to see The Dean - a formidable man. they tell him they want to make a serious complaint, about racial and sexual harassment and threatening behaviour.

MIESo you see, sir, I'm sick of it. If it happens again, I don't know what I'll do.
HARIMe too, I'm freaked... thinking I'm gonna get attacked at any moment.
DEANI see, er, Mia and erm Gary, isn't it? And you didn't provoke them in any way?
MIEWho's Gary?
HARIHuh ???
DEANI wasn't aware that this sort of thing happened in my College. Well, it will probably all blow over. Lads of that age go through these phases. But as you say, you think some of them attend the college.
DEANSo we'll have to find out who they are exactly, before we can do anything else... Hmm.
HARIMaybe we should contact the police? I'm serious! Those losers are well out of order!
MIEThere should be a law against people like them! In fact, I reckon there is!
HARIHmm, surely he has some legal responsibility for us? Whilst on the premises at least. I don't wanna have a row with the Dean. We should be able to trust him. But he's a real stick in the mud. The police should be contacted, what else can we do? Hmmm, perhaps a demo outside the college would get people's attention.

Q: Which of the following most closely resembles the Dean's attitude to the Hari and Mie's complaint?
  1. It's just a phase - something we all have to go through and accept
  2. This would never happen if we still had corporal punishment
  3. Bullying is a deadly serious issue - in the same league as domestic violence, assault and sexual abuse. It devastates people's lives

Click to go to the top of the page The bus stop: Scene 4AAB
Hari and his mates have formed a gang of their own and are hunting down the other gang. They go round the next corner and there they are, hanging out in a kiddies' playground. They challenge them and a ruck starts. One lad pulls a knife, another a chain - things start to get really out of control. Then the police show up!

HARITypical! The one time you wanna see their ugly mugs 'n' they're nowhere to be seen!
JAKEYeah! We'll track 'em down and sort 'em right out!
EKOLook! There they are! C'mon. There's no going back now!
MARIOHey! Look who it is!
WAYNEHa ha! Hello, girls! What can we do for you today?
SCOTTOr should I say...to you!
MARIOGET 'EM ALL
HARIARGGG!
JAKEUh oh - things are getting nasty!
EKOIt's the filth!
HARIUh Oh, It's the Police! Maybe we should split? They might throw US in a cell! But these nutters will never let it rest - we'll probably end up dead! I dunno! P'rhaps the police'll help us now?

Q: At what age is someone considered criminally responsible under UK law?
  1. 10 yrs
  2. 14 yrs
  3. 17 yrs

Click to go to the top of the page The college toilets: Scene 4ABA
Its Wednesday lunchtime in the college toilets… and Hari has bumped into one of the gang who speaks to him. Hari has told him that he sucks ass!

HARISo, here I am, standing in the bogs telling this idiot to step off! You could cut the atmosphere with a knife. Well, I ain't gonna let his bad attitude bring me down.
HARIYour so-called 'gang' make out like you're hard-man gangsters. Well, sorry to burst ya bubble but this is the real world not movie-land and life's too short. Tss! Leave me and my mates out of it, ya hear! I warn you - if you're not careful, it'll come back on you big time.
MARIOFinished your stupid lecture? I hate to burst your bubble, nappy-head, but where are your mates? You think you can get away with being so cocky all by your little ol' self! This is my world and it feels real enough to me! Is it real enough for you?
HARIBetter split! Don't wanna turn my back on him, tho, he's vicious! He could well be carrying a blade. Okay, p'raps with my martial arts' training I could defend myself, but I sure don't wanna get cut up. Gotta be chill and get outta here in one piece.

Q: Which of the following best describes Hari's state of mind?
  1. Delusional and paranoid. He has been watching too many violent films and it has affected his judgement in a real situation
  2. He is 'brickin' it' because his gang has deserted him in his hour of need
  3. Angry and frustrated - trying to communicate with Mario is like trying to get blood from a stone

Click to go to the top of the page The college toilets: Scene 4ABB
It's Wednesday lunchtime in the college toilets… Hari meets Mario, who apologises for his behaviour and explains that he is frightened to go against what his mates say… he only joined the gang cos he was getting picked on B4 by some other lads…

HARISo, here I am, standing in the bogs with this idiot! Wonderin' what on earth is gonna happen next? I can't stand the tension so I start talking...
HARISo, you gonna give me more grief? Well, 'scuse me if I don't stick around to listen! I'm sure you'll find someone to hassle when you 're banged up, loser! Bet your pathetic mates won't stick by you then.
MARIOSorry... Huh! I know all about prison, My bro' went down, cos he took the rap for some 'mates'. He got a well harsh time inside...
HARISo go tell someone who cares!
MARIOI hooked up with the others because I was getting roughed up by some older lads. They took me under their wing. I felt safe being one of the boys.
HARISo what's with all the racist stuff? An' dishin' out the beatings? Power trippin' gone crazy? Or just pure ignorance and hate?
MARIO'Spose... dunno really! I ain't racist, but if I go against 'em they'll kill me. At first, stuff was just a wind up. Then they started getting cocky! Well out of order!
HARIYou could o' walked.
MARIOI never thought they would go this far. An' now I'm stuck cos to ditch 'em means no mates, only enemies.
HARII should feel sorry for him as I know what it's like to get a rough time from losers like him. Hmm, it takes some guts to apologise so maybe he deserves another chance?

Q: What is dyslexia?
  1. A learning disability
  2. A personality disorder
  3. A form of social exclusion

Click to go to the top of the page Hari's bedroom: Scene 4BAA
It's Wednesday lunchtime and Hari is bunking off school. He's in his bedroom wondering what to do...

HARII've been bunking off college for a whole week now. I haven't seen anybody or said anything to anyone 'bout what happened. Not to my parents, not to my brother....
HARII texted Mus 'n' that a few times but I told 'em I'm ill, not that I'm hiding out! They'd think I was really sad if they knew...
HARIIt's getting kinda boring round here, though and it's tiresome pretending to be ill. I can't keep this up much longer!
HARIAhh, I just got a text message from Mus...Let's see what he's got to say for 'imself.
HARIOh no! They got him... he says he made it home and he fell unconscious. His girlfriend has taken him to hospital and reported it to the cops.
HARIThey are such scum! I've really let him down. He's looking out for me; warning me to be careful! and I've been a wimp, holing myself up in here! I've let myself down 'n' all. I gotta stick by 'im now... it's the least I can do!
HARIOh Mus! I'm so sorry, mate! I should've bin there been there for you. Hmmm... we can either talk to the cops or we kick their sorry butts so hard that they'll beg us for mercy! I know which one I'd prefer, but it's up to Mus - he's the one who's hurt...

Q: Which of the following is not a form of prejudice?
  1. To dislike or hate someone because of the colour of their skin
  2. To hold a different opinion to someone else
  3. To laugh at someone because of their sexual orientation

Hari fixes his moped but one afternoon after college he goes to collect his moped, and there is a small crowd of people. His moped has been set on fire. The emergency services/police turn up.

HARISo, I fixed my moped and it's been a couple o' weeks since. I've been going to college on it! It's speedy, good fun and it gets the girls going! Ya see, I didn't wanna be a wimp.
HARISticking ya head in the sand gets you nowhere fast! And I couldn't be seen getting lifts from mummy or daddy! Haven't seen much of the bully-boys.
HARI'Sides, I'm not gonna let 'em stop me getting' an education! Don't wanna be stuck 'ere with those no-hopers for the rest of my life. I'm off home so I'm gonna pick up the bike now.
HARIArrgh! What the ...? My moped!! Someone's been messin' with it! I can't ride it now! No prizes for guessing who did this! GRRRR!
COPIs this your bike then, son? Some lads were seen tampering with it, but ran off when they realised someone had seen them. Unfortunately, the witness claims that they cannot identify the culprits.
HARIOh really? Huh! More likely that whoever spotted 'em would be too scared to say anything...
HARIHmmm. This must've been done by them! I swear that at least one of 'em goes to the college - even tho' they've got the brains of a peanut between 'em. As I pulled up outside college on my moped the other day, I saw this lad going into the building. I thought I recognised him! But I hoped I was mistaken...
HARIMaybe I should tell the cops about 'em being racist an’ threatenin’ me an' stuff... An' say it might be connected. I dunno! There must be something someone can do?

Hari goes to the police. The police take a full statement from him about the incident. A couple of the lads in the gang attend the college and Hari has given some names and descriptions, so the police will be paying them a visit.

HARIIt's Tuesday. My parents persuaded me to come to the cop shop to report stuff. I had to really psyche myself up for it. I was angry. Wanted to go in there... guns blazing, you know what I mean, and show' em I mean business, but when I got there I just felt dead nervous.
HARIA friendly policeman at the desk took my details down. A bit later I was taken to an interview room... by a policewoman... She was quite cute actually!
HARIThat was two days ago 'n' I haven't been to college since. Yesterday I was feelin' pretty low. I wished I hadn't gone to the police, I mean, suppose nothing happens! I was worried those jokers would know I grassed and would come after me again... I even considered running away.
HARIBut this morning Jake, Eko and Mus came round! They said the police turned up at the college yesterday afternoon, questioning people, etc. So things are probably happening after all. They cheered me up, chatting and joking around...just normal stuff really.
HARII realised that running out on people would be a lousy stunt to pull. From now on we are gonna stick together!
