Life in Britain since the war
QCA Unit 13
What's the big idea?
Life in Britain has changed a lot since 1948, at work and at
home. Steel works and shipyards have given way to businesses based
on the microchip. The rise of new technologies has meant that there
are now less manual labourers and more women at work.
The same technology has transformed the home. Freezers and
microwaves have changed the way we eat, and supermarkets have
revolutionised our shopping habits. Rising car ownership has led to
a decline in high street shops and the development of out-of-town
shopping and leisure centres.
There have been changes in population as people from other
countries have come to live and work in Britain.
