Life in ancient Egypt
QCA Unit 10
What's the big idea?
The pharaohs ruled for thousands of years in ancient Egypt.
Thanks to the River Nile, the land was rich and could support a
complex civilisation. It was surrounded by desert and was seldom
invaded, so life continued unchanged right up to the time of the
Romans.
The Egyptians believed in life after death and spent much time
and effort in preparing the dead for their journey to the
afterworld. Bodies were mummified and tombs were inscribed with
spells, written in hieroglyphics. The Egyptians buried everyday
objects in the tombs for use in the afterlife. A lot of what they
left behind them comes from their tombs.
